November 2-5, 2023 – Cybersecurity Club Competes in Fall Cyberforce Competition

The Cybersecurity Club recently competed in the Department of Energy’s Cyberforce competition. This experience gave our team valuable insight into seeing cybersecurity practices in the real world. We learned how to secure infrastructure given to us a week prior to the competition, along with learning how websites interact with databases and what security goes along with that. Another key piece of experience we got was completing a C-suite brief video and security documentation. Lastly, we got to network with over 100 other schools from across the country and hear from laboratories and companies offering internships. This competition was an invaluable step in our educational journey and highlights the importance of having clubs to go to these events.

September 9, 2023 – Physics Club Trip to LIGO

On Saturday September 9, 2023 members of Physics Club went on a field trip to the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory in Richland, WA. Club members observed the analytical methods scientists use to detect gravitational waves which ripple through space as a result of massive cosmic events, like colliding black holes and neutron stars.

April 18, 2023 – Arabic Club Hosts “Breaking the Fast” Event

"This event was the first event that Arabic Club offered in person since 2019. We were very pleased with the turn out of students from different background and believes to the event. The event was very engaging and informative by sharing the importance of the holy month of Ramadan to all Muslims. We broke our fast with food from different regions of world and we enjoyed the Iftar with families and we made new friends." -Arabic Club

April 1, 2023 – Art Exhibit Collaboration Between Arts & Design Club and MaST Center

"The Lab Coat Project is an art exhibit collaboration between the MaST Center Aquarium and Highline College’s Arts and Design Club. At the MaST Center Aquarium we are challenging what a scientist looks like. Simply, science is investigating a question based on an observation. This means anyone can be a scientist! It is not just a person wearing a white coat conducting experiments in a lab. It’s letting our curiosity lead us to examine a phenomenon and gathering evidence to help us better understand the world around us. Highline College’s Arts and Design Club brought this exhibit to life by depicting science themes or scientists on lab coats. The artists decorated the lab coats with “what science means to them” which included plants, animals, and even shapes! The Lab Coat Project exhibit is on display at the MaST Center Aquarium from March to April. Afterwards, that artwork will be worn by MaST Center Aquarium volunteers as their new uniforms during Discovery Days." -Aeriel Wauhob, Community Engagement Coordinator with the Highline College MaST Center

March 23-25, 2023 – Cyber Competition Club Participates in the Pacific Rim Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition

"This year, Highline's Cyber Competition Club competed in the Pacific Rim Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, Washington. During this event, these students were tasked with defending a fictitious company's corporate network from professional hackers and providing technology support to its employees. The event was an opportunity for Highline's students to showcase skills they learned in their different CIS programs, including Global Cybersecurity Investigations AAS, Network Security Engineering AAS, and Cybersecurity and Forensics BAS. Overall, the competition was a success, and the students had the chance to interact with schools from all over the region. The Cyber Competition Club is open to students from all programs, and they look forward to more students from other programs participating in next year's event!" - Highline Cyber Competition Club
