ASHC Student Government Selection
Applications for the ASHC President and ASHC Vice President are now closed.
The Associated Students of Highline College (ASHC) is the student government or advocacy organization for Highline students, which represents students’ interests and concerns to the college administration, faculty, staff, and the greater community.
I was diagnosed with Autism at an early age, and I view it as something that sets me back from a communication standpoint. I also view it as my superpower because I can use that to speak out on issues that are happening in my community. I have recently fought so hard to pass a bill that ensures immigrant families know how their children especially those with disabilities are performing in school. Immigrant students contribute to our societies by providing their expertise in various fields such as technology, community service, health care and so much more. We need to not only honor them but to CENTER THEM IN POLICY MAKING!!!!! I am dedicating this position and platform to pay attention and act on empowering immigrant students in this college.
- How do you hope to serve others as a student leader by giving back to Highline in each of the following areas: (Limit 500 words)
- Building Communities
- Developing Leaders
- Social Justice
- Global Awareness
As someone who has been attending this college for the past eight months, I can say with confidence that Highline really ensures that all student matter especially immigrant and BIPOC students. Bringing various students from all walks of life and different backgrounds together will be my number one priority because it takes all of us to ensure that our nationally recognized diversity is reflected in who we are as a student body. I also want my platform as vice president to enable my peers to run for office whether here at Highline College or an official position. I could be the first student from the Achieve program to be in this position therefore it is my responsibility to enable students from that program to help them on their journey to self-advocacy. I am the son of a refugee from Somalia as well and every day when I’m outside I often see racism around my community. In fact, a few months ago I witnessed the mosque that I attend regularly was attacked for just existing!!!! The Muslim population is at the forefront of this global fight for social justice and human rights, I will continue that fight as we move forward with ensuring that all current and future students feel welcome, and their values are listened to and acted upon. Highline’s student population is more than 13,000 and they come from all over the world and all walks of life. We are a globally connected community and I do recognize and empower all students from any country to come to me so we can do amazing things together. The diversity is one of the strengths of this college and as vice president, I will honor and respect all voices!!!!!!!!!!
